I was building real memories with the watch.
Danny Milton, HODINKEE (via the Crown & Caliber Blog)
This week we’re sharing a fun and thought provoking article by Danny Milton about one thing all collectors have in common; the question of when, and if, to sell a piece.
Milton expertly recounts his dive into the world of collecting, the late-night, all-consuming perusal of blogs, watching of video, scanning auction sites and dreaming of ownership and saving for the day. Which finally comes when he purchases his first luxury time piece, The Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR, otherwise known as “The Batman.”
As luck would have it, shortly after Milton purchases his coveted Batman, Rolex stopped making them, causing the market price of the timepiece to more than double. We’ll leave you to read the article to find out what Milton decided to do, but this is a conundrum that every collector is likely to have – deciding whether or not to liquidate a piece that has appreciated. Especially as we improve in acquiring pieces for our collections. A fun and thoughtful read that’s worth the time (pun totally intended)!
